It all began with a desperate 911 call.
A woman was screaming for help inside an apartment in Macomb, Illinois.
No one listening to that call could have imagined that, just minutes later, several lives would be changed forever.
1. “He’s Stabbing Me!”
It was the night of March 16, 2024.
When officers arrived at the building, they could hear screams coming from inside.
They rushed into the apartment.
What they found was horrifying. A woman was seriously injured, and there was blood inside the room.
But the man believed to be responsible was still there.
And he was holding a knife.
The officers ordered him to drop it.
He refused.
Then, for a few seconds, he disappeared behind a room.
Those few seconds would change everything.
2. A Child Suddenly Appears
The man came back into view.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
He was holding a four-year-old boy.
The child was trapped in front of him while knives remained dangerously close to his body.
The officers had only seconds to react.
No one knew what the man would do next.
And then, a decision had to be made.
3. One Gunshot
In that critical moment, Officer Nick Goc fired.
Just one shot.
The bullet struck the man and the child he was holding.
Both died.
The room suddenly descended into chaos.
But what happened immediately afterward became one of the most haunting moments of the entire incident.
The officer realized what had happened.
And he said words that would stay with everyone who heard them:
“I killed a baby.”
4. Nothing Could Undo What Had Happened
His fellow officers tried to calm him down.
They reminded him that he had been forced to make a decision during an extremely dangerous situation.
But no explanation could change the outcome.
A four-year-old child was dead.
His mother had survived the attack, but she had lost her son.
And the officer who pulled the trigger would have to live with that moment.
5. The Question That Remained
The shooting was later investigated and became the subject of debate over the decisions made during those few critical seconds.
Subsequent internal reviews did not find the officer criminally responsible, and the state prosecutor determined there was no basis for criminal charges.
But a legal decision cannot erase a tragedy.
The boy’s family continued seeking legal accountability over his death.
And perhaps that is the hardest part of this story:
The gunshot lasted only a moment. But its consequences would remain long after the police sirens disappeared.
For the family, there would always be the memory of a little boy who would never come home.
And for the officer…
there would be one sentence he might never forget.
